Sarah Clement

ARTIST/ILLUSTRATOR/WORKSHOP TEACHER

I am an artist, illustrator, surface pattern designer and workshop teacher with a passion for the natural world. I specialize in botanical and animal themed drawings utilizing pen, paint and photoshop. Creating whimsical illustrations with flowing patterns that delight and inspire, my work celebrates the interconnection of all living things. Using nature as my most influential teacher, I believe that art can ignite joy and create positive change in the world.

The longer story…

I grew up between Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast and have loved drawing since I was a little kid. I feel that the Pacific Northwest is an intrinsic part of my artwork and me as a person as I’ve been observing the natural world around me for my whole life. I’ve been collecting rocks and feathers, noticing the dance of sea kelp, the way the ferns sing a vibrant green chorus under the cedars. The movement of my pen on paper is influenced by the organic, flowing lines I’ve been taking in with my eyes.

I am a graduate of Langara College and Emily Carr University of Art and Design (BFA 2010). My creative projects have ranged from album covers, temporary tattoos, skis, editorials, and greeting cards. I’ve created several murals for the BC Children’s hospital with the fourth one being unveiled in Summer 2020. I’ve also had the honour of illustrating a kid’s book, 'Half for You & Half for Me' by Katherine Govier, published by Whitecap Books, which was selected as a 'Heather's Pick' by Chapters Indigo.

I work from my home studio in Gibsons on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Swimming in the ocean, running, biking, yoga and meditation are some of my favourite activities. Not to mention spending time with friends and getting out into the big, inspiring, natural world.

As I continue my journey, I’m focusing on creating artwork, sustainably-made products, and patterns that bring beauty and joy to everyday life.

The poet Mary Oliver put it best when she said, ‘Attention is the beginning of devotion’. I think that the more time we spend in nature, the more we see how we too are part of nature, and it is a relationship of interdependence, deep connection and love. The more we befriend the natural world, the more we will see that we are connected to a larger whole and therefore will treat all of it with more care, love and respect.

I hope that you find beauty and joy in my artwork, and that it acts as a reminder that whether human, salmon or tree, ‘we are all connected’.
